Deciding to stay at Footscray

I didn't know much about Footscray. I hadn't been to the area in the past two years in Melbourne. After three years of preparation, I returned with the intention to stay here due to the opportunity to be involved in the resident art program at Footscray Community Arts. Through brief conversations with the arts centre, I knew that this was a multicultural community with a very inclusive atmosphere.

However, when I searched the internet for rentals in Footscray, I saw a lot of negative reviews. Unsafe, robbery and with many refugees were all labels associated with Footscray. With some suspicion and concern, we came to see the house where we now live. The agent was a very gentle lady who took great care to show us the house and its surroundings. As we were leaving, we met our neighbour, who was coming home from work with his skateboard and asked us, smilingly, if we would be renting this house and said he was looking forward to our arrival. After thanking him, we walked around the neighbourhood, which was clean and tidy, with fresh air. A lot of worries had been put aside, and we were much more determined to stay.
